No Place

Created by COPA’s MFA students and led by the New School faculty Irina Kruzhilina over the course of the 2022 Spring semester, the performance takes the form of a promenade, where audiences are taken on a dream journey through a series of worlds that trace our ultimately doomed desire to trade our flawed everyday life for an unattainable ideal. Along the way the audience encounters mysterious travel agents, participants in an otherworldly perfection pageant and characters from the ultimate utopian play, Shakespeare’s The Tempest. The Ruthless Cosmopolitan: Apotropaios

The Ruthless Cosmopolitan: Apotropaios is a live ensemble performance art work from sculptor and performance artist Chelsea Steinberg Gay (b. Brooklyn, NY 1986). Starring Steinberg Gay’s alter-ego drag persona, The Ruthless Cosmopolitan, the performance combines elements of contemporary dance, hip hop, Yiddishkeit, drag, ballroom, color theory and queer activism. Apotropaios is a protective amulet realized through the sublimation of ancestral ritual and the queering of folkloric Jewish femme narratives. Apotropaios manifests, recognizes, and dissolves the restrictive confines surrounding ancient and contemporary gender identities. Together the dancers embody, personalize, reveal and deconstruct each of six genders identified in Jewish biblical, mystical, and exegetical sources. The performance is presented by Ruthless Cosmopolitan Productions, New York, in partnership with the Parsons School of Design, Intlx Productions, and The New School for Social Research. The Ruthless Cosmopolitan: Apotropaios is the result of collaborations with multidisciplinary artist Austin Casebolt, polymath performer and vogue femme dancer Chicahua Zipactonal Martínez of The Royal House of Nina Oricci, contemporary dancers Theo Armstrong, Paris Cullen, and Arien Wilkerson, choreographer Rebecca Pappas, and turntablist and producer Amore Querida. Click Here for More.

Playing The Other

MFA Contemporary Theatre and Performance students will present PLAYING THE OTHER, an intimate devised theatrical piece facilitated by Obie Award-winning playwright Dael Orlandersmith and Tony Award-winner Jim Nicola. PLAYING THE OTHER requires us to journey to unfamiliar places; places around identity, race, gender, culture, and class. This reminds us that doing so can often lead us right back to our very own backyard. Click Here for More.
